Safe Horizon provide short-term, emergency and safe shelter for people fleeing domestic violence and for young people under the age of 21 who have no place to stay. Safe Horizon offers eight confidential domestic violence shelters located throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Our domestic violence shelters offer a full range of services comprehensive programming to support safety and healing.

Eligibility: Domestic violence victims, and young people under the age of 21 who have no place to stay regardless of immigration status.

Interpreter assistance will be made available for individuals who do not speak English.

The Catholic Charities Department of Immigration Services offers legal consultations and representation to documented and undocumented newcomers regarding their immigration status.

Catholic Charities’ Immigrant and Refugee Services work is rooted in the mission to uphold the dignity of every immigrant and refugee and to build a just and compassionate society. We help newcomers reunify with their families, resettle in a safe place, and apply their talents and skills in New York. Services include assistance with immigration applications and court defense, work authorization, integration and case management support, support to unaccompanied minors, job development, English and civics classes, and citizenship preparation. We also assist immigrants in avoiding exploitation by unscrupulous practitioners by providing reliable information and realistic counsel about immigration status.

Central American Legal Assistance (CALA) provides free or low-cost legal services to New York's immigrant community. Our mission is to protect and defend Central and South American asylum-seekers and to expand the civil rights of all immigrants. CALA has had an open door to newly-arrived immigrants since 1985. CALA's staff are all bi-lingual. Based in a Brooklyn church, CALA offers immigrants a home base for advice or counseling as well as legal representation. We have put thousands of Latino immigrants on the road to citizenship.

Human Rights First

Helps people living in the greater Washington, D.C., New York City, and Houston metropolitan areas who do not already have legal representation, cannot afford an attorney, and need help with a claim for asylum or other protection-based form of immigration status. To apply for asylum, a person MUST apply within ONE YEAR of entering the United States, unless they can show that they qualify for an exception to that rule. Human Rights First also helps people to apply for withholding of removal and for protection under the U.N. Convention Against Torture (CAT).

Eligibility: This program does not provide assistance to individuals with cases at the appeals level. Human Rights First will conduct an initial assessment of the client's needs. If eligible, client will be referred to a pro-bono attorney.

AAFSC provides culturally and linguistically competent services to all immigrants and refugees. They have an anti-violence helpline and serve survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and trafficking. Their Case Managers help surivors process emotions and build safety plans. AAFSC also provides legal advocacy, court accompaniments, translation services, and assistance with Orders of Protection.
